This picture of PFC T. E. Underwood was taken on the island of Saipan in July of 1944, by W. Eugene Smith, working for Life Magazine. It tells a story that words can’t. The details don’t matter. How old is he? What is he looking at? Where is he going? What is he thinking? His face looks young but his eyes look old and tired, like he’s seen more than he’s ever wanted to. This picture fascinates and haunts me.
What do you see in it?
